CHAPTER 14

JADE

Seeing Nick the morning after their shower encounter was terribly awkward. Jade had expected that. What she hadn’t expected was that it would be awkward in such a delicious way.

“Do you want to come in?” he asked when he answered the door.

And she did want to. She wanted to see the inside of his house, to continue the work of decoding the mystery that was Nick Swan. She wanted to be close to him, too, and she couldn’t think of any better way to do that than to be inside a space that belonged to him.

Unfortunately, the timing was wrong. She was on her way to work.

“Maybe another time,” she told him.

And he smiled in response, but at the same time, she thought she saw something give way in his face, as though he was genuinely disappointed by her response — as if he had wanted something else.

He handed her the bundle of her clothes. They were neatly folded. For a moment, she was surprised, and then she wasn’t — of course, he was a coastie too, and he would be used to taking care of his own uniform.

“I’ll see you at work,” she said.

“You’re going in early.”

“I need to get changed and get my hair up.” It was currently blowing freely around her shoulders, a sensation that felt positively luxurious given how rarely she got to take advantage of it.

He nodded, his eyes searching her face. “See you there, then,” he said.

She lingered for a moment, realizing that she had been anticipating something when she got to his house. Maybe it was just the thrill of seeing him again. He occupied her every waking thought at the moment. And even when she slept, his face invaded her dreams.

Walking away from him now — even though that had always been the plan — felt like missing an opportunity.

He cleared his throat, and Jade realized she’d been standing there staring at him for an uncomfortable amount of time.

“Thanks,” she said, and turned away.

The walk to work gave her a bit of time to clear her head, and that did help, but by the time she had gotten changed into her uniform and put her hair up in the usual tight bun, Nick had arrived and was lounging at the table.

She couldn’t even make eye contact with him. Not with that shower just a few feet away. Not while they were the only two people in this room where they had now been intimate twice. If she tried to say his name, she was going to start ripping his clothes off.

She looked down, but that was no help. One long leg was sticking out from under the table, his thick, firm thigh muscle clearly defined through the fitted fabric of his uniform. It made Jade want to climb into his lap and forget about the fact that the rest of the squad would be here at any moment.

“Are our assignments posted?” she asked, turning away from him so she wouldn’t have to cope with the fact that the sight of him was driving her wild.
